Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

2008, 3’ 40” video on continuous loop, motor, mirror ball.

The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh / 13 June - 12 September 2009

A 1972 video of Marlene Dietrich performing Pete Seger’s thought-provoking, and at the time of the Vietnam War, intrinsically political anti-war song is the source material for this expanded cinematic installation. The video, multiplied and animated, is projected onto a rotating disco ball, so that hundreds of small singing Dietrichs radiate off the mirrors, a face in each small frame spin like a constellation around the exhibition space. The glamour of Hollywood, the implicit good times of a night at the disco, and the concept of cultural loss are conflated within a work that attempts to bring new agency to an old recording.
