My first five years living in New York City are reflected in this series. After a couple of months here, I met a deejay online in 2000. His name was Larry Tee and he was a song writer. He’d written Supermodel (You Better Work) for RuPaul. He was living off royalties from that tune while he cleaned up a drug habit he had acquired in the 90s. I was intrigued. Larry lived at night. He promoted parties at clubs, he wrote songs for bands and he was interested in an emerging sound that he soon coined ‘electroclash.’ If you know these bands, you’ll know what I mean: Chicks on Speed, Fischerspooner, Peaches and Scissor Sisters. If not, then you’ll understand I did a lot with Larry. I left the security of a job working at a photo magazine and followed him into a more creative and chaotic life. I would tour with these bands and photograph them at their gigs or in our Williamsburg loft and in our club. It was a very alive moment for me and my friends, though ultimately I didn’t find what I was looking for. 911 may have had something to do with that, though it’s hard to say how. It’s just a feeling.
